People use the words parkour and freerunning interchangeably, but they are not quite the same thing. They share the same roots and the same gym, and most athletes end up doing both.

Parkour: efficiency and control

Parkour is about moving from one point to another as efficiently as possible. The focus is on control, precision, and overcoming obstacles with the movement that makes the most sense.

Freerunning: creativity and flow

Freerunning adds expression. Athletes link movements into creative lines, adding flips, spins, and style. There is no single right way to move.

Where they overlap

Both use the same foundations: landing, vaulting, jumping, climbing, and body awareness. A strong base in one makes the other easier and safer.

Which should you try first?

Start with parkour fundamentals. They build the strength and control that freerunning relies on. As you progress, you can explore freerunning and even breakdance for more creative movement.
